GAM Enterprises has acquired intellectual property and manufacturing rights to Schaeffler's PSC precision gear reducer line, marking a significant vertical integration play in the industrial robotics supply chain. According to The Robot Report, the Illinois-based motion control company formed a new subsidiary, GAM-Melior GmbH, headquartered in Hameln, Germany, to operate and develop the acquired product line.
The PSC gear reducer has become foundational to GAM's operations. The component serves as the core transmission technology within the company's flagship GPL product, which targets precision automation and robotics applications. By acquiring the underlying patents and manufacturing capabilities, GAM gains direct control over a critical element of its supply chain that was previously sourced from Schaeffler.
Craig Van den Avont, chief executive of GAM, characterized the acquired technology as offering performance advantages over competing servo gearboxes. "The patented technology is revolutionary in that it outperforms all other servo gearboxes on the market and represents a highly differentiated solution for high-precision applications," he said in a statement. The acquisition aligns with GAM's broader strategy of building proprietary motion control solutions for robotics and industrial automation customers.
Strategic Repositioning in Robotics Supply
Schaeffler originally acquired the PSC technology when it purchased Melior Motion GmbH in 2022. That transaction was intended to strengthen Schaeffler's position in the precision gearbox market as industrial automation accelerated. However, the technology's return to GAM, which had been a primary customer, signals shifting priorities within the supplier ecosystem.
For GAM, which was founded in 1990 and serves blue-chip manufacturers across aerospace, medical, semiconductor, and industrial automation sectors, the acquisition eliminates a key dependency relationship. Hartmut Hoffmann has been appointed managing director of GAM-Melior GmbH to oversee operations and continued development of the PSC product line.
Implications for Robotics Development
The deal has broader significance for the robotics industry. Precision gear reducers are essential components in collaborative robots, industrial manipulators, and other automated systems that require controlled motion at high repeatability levels. By owning this technology outright, GAM can accelerate innovation cycles and tailor the reducer platform to emerging customer needs without coordinating through multiple organizational layers.
GAM stated that it intends to continue supporting existing customers of the PSC product line while building additional capabilities on top of the platform. The acquisition also expands GAM's manufacturing footprint into Germany, providing closer proximity to European automation customers while strengthening its global supply chain resilience.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The move reflects a broader trend in industrial robotics where component suppliers pursue vertical integration to secure proprietary technologies and reduce reliance on third-party manufacturers.
